Children and adults alike are drawn to Steve because they know that they will be accepted and valued.
I promote Grounds Development as an opportunity for real learning in the act of enhancing our environment.I have worked with a large number of students who have taken a hard look at their school grounds and said to themselves, 'we could do better'.
Together we have built tree houses, dug trampoline pits, installed climbing walls, laid giant chessboards and in doing so, enhanced the daily experience of being at school.
For them, these were meaningful projects that inspired them and gave them clear answers as to why they were doing, what they were doing.
Whether special needs or mainstream, all students have the capacity to make a difference to their school. Indeed it could be argued that they are the only people qualified to do so. I would relish the opportunity of working along side your students and teachers to lay the basis for another way of working.
This approach could form the backbone of a special needs programme at your school or revitalise your mainstream technology curriculum. This approach will fulfill the broader ambition of the New Zealand Curriculum of empowerment and will not fail to motivate your students.
Projects can be undertaken at all levels from kindergarten to college. Timescales will vary with each venture. Clear opportunities exist for cross curricula threads, where suspension of the timetable may be the most appropriate means of managing resources. Others projects will require a more ‘piecemeal’ approach.
I would be happy to visit you and your students to discuss opportunities for working at your school. Contact me now.
